Saturday, June 18, 2022
On Saturday, June 18th from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm, under fair skies, 71° air temp and 17 mph ESE winds, gusting to 26 mph, Heartland Chapter members Christopher Doane, Youth Director and his son William Doane assisted 11 enthusiastic scouts and their parents from pack 4022 of Nora Springs, IA. with a fishing outing at Buffalo Run Golf Course.
Christopher gave a presentation on some of Iowa’s varied fish species from largest to smallest. He also spoke on the Muskies Inc. mission statement and what specific activities our Heartland Chapter performs to meet those objectives.
After the presentations concluded, the Scouts were each given a rod and reel combo and two new lures. They were also provided with a slightly used lure which was donated to the Heartland by anglers as part of a muskie rod giveaway during the Heartland’s spring muskie fishing tournament fundraiser.
With new fishing equipment in hand along with night crawlers and artificial baits, the scouting entourage made their way to the lake for an aquatic assault on some bluegill and smallmouth bass. Fish, too numerous to count, were reeled in to shore on seemingly every cast.
What a special honor for our Heartland Chapter to assist in this annual youth outing to get our young people outside and fishing!

KIDS' FISHING CAMP
August 3-5, 2022
On Wednesday, Thursday & Friday, August 3–5 from 8:00 am–12:00 pm, Chris Doane, Youth Director, Michael Wentworth, Secretary and member Mathew Doane were honored to represent the Heartland in participating in the Clear Lake Parks and Recreation (CLPR) annual “Kids’ Fishing Camp” at the Ventura, IA. grade jetties for 20 young anglers ages 6-12.
On hand from the city of Clear Lake were Jim Jackson & Seth Townsend, Parks Department, Jason Dunning, Public Works, Mary Jo Vrba, Athletics & Wellness Center & Brianna Sholly, Public Library. Representing the Iowa DNR were Scott Grummer, Kurt Meek, Emily Wollenweber & Ben Schlader.
On Wednesday, Scott & Emily showed the youngsters examples of electro-shocked walleye, largemouth bass, bluegill, bullhead, carp, black crappie, yellow bass & one large flathead catfish. They explained the identities of the fish, how to differentiate between the species and how they all fit into the Clear Lake ecosystem.
On Friday, after numerous bluegill, bullhead & green sunfish were fought to shore, Jim presented each enthusiastic fisherman with a new rod/reel combo & Chris presented them with a donation of one new lure, one slightly used lure & a Heartland sticker. The slightly used lures were part of a donation initiative from participants in our spring musky tournament fundraiser.
Each year something, other than catching fish, grabs the attention and time of the anglers. One year it was who could collect the most goose feathers, another year it was a rather large deceased crayfish. This year, it was a painted turtle that made several attempts to come ashore to sun itself & numerous crayfish which made themselves know between the jetty rocks.
